The pension Romantika is in Matala, only 500 meters far away from the famous beach (own, big parking). There are altogether 10 single, double, and three-bed room, each with own bath (shower/WC) and a large community balcony. A roomy four-bed room with rinse for families(K2) is new, as well as a double room with own small balcony (K1). The rooms in the ground floor (K4) are again reconditioned and barrier-free (not wheelchair, but seniors suitably). A PC at the receipt can be used and wireless area network is available. There is the moreover one a cosy lounge with a bar for softdrinks,café, tea or toast. The exempt private company is led by Maria, a young and very nice woman. She speaks well English and German. The pension is quite calmly and nevertheless central convenient. In only 5 minutes you reach the place Matalawith its many business, bar and restaurants.
Matala is located approx 70km from Iraklio (the capital of Crete) and 10km south west of Phaistos. This lively seaside town was once the ancient port of Phaistos and later Gortys, and ruins of the ancient city are still visible in the sea. This area of coastline is most known for its artificial caves, used is tombs. During the 60´s and 70´s Matala was the meeting place of the"flower children" and the caves hosted hippy communes. Famous people such as Cat Stevens stayed there (today the caves are protected by the Archaeological Service of Crete) Matala bay has a sandy beach, and many tavernas, owing to its exceptional beauty it is one of the best known summer resorts of Crete.
